The Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens compatible with digital SLR cameras with 35mm full frame image sensors.

My previous lenses in this range were the Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye and the Canon 17-40mm f4L USM. So straight away I was keen to see if the one Sigma lens could do the same job as well as my previous two?

The lens feels solid and well made, with nice grippy rubber and a built in lens hood. The AF/M switch sticks out a little and although there is a positive click, it may be all too easy to accidently switch the AF off.

The lens produced sharp images in the pit box and seemed to be sharp across the whole of the image with a reasonable aperture. There was good contrast, with detail in the shadow areas, which considering the teams had no livery, (so the garages were quite dull), was most impressive.

This ultra wide angle zoom range is extremely useful for working in tight, cramped pit boxes enabling you to capture the atmosphere of it all, without any compromise in quality. I also no longer have to swap lenses and so with the Sigma 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM / DG HSM | A on another camera body and the speed of the HSM’s, I should have no excuse for missing anything in the pit box this season.

In conclusion, the Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM is an extremely versatile ultra wide-angle zoom lens, which sits nicely alongside the Sigma 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM / DG HSM | A. Despite only being an f4.5-5.6, it produces good contrast, sharp images at a very affordable price.
